Doing a dist upgrade of ubuntu from 10.04 to 10.10 beta stopped while running the post config. After about 10 minutes I looked in ps and saw:

root      9529  0.0  0.0   1772   572 pts/2    S+   16:59   0:00 /bin/sh -e /var/lib/dpkg/info/samba.postinst configure 2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.2

it appears the config may not exit correctly

after running kill on the above process the upgrade finished as expected.

Sounds like an error in the post config script.
Please contact the Ubuntu Samba package maintainers.
