My samba server is providing file and print services, the latter using CUPS 1.3.8. As soon as my Vista laptop attempts to print (which it can do) it starts sending repeated queries to samba. smbd's CPU useage than jumps to 15 to 20%, mostly user time, and stays there until I disconnect or power down the laptop. The problem might be the client. I am filing this bug because I don't know, and I need somewhere to post the packet capture. Unfortunately I don't see an upload link. Even if the client is "wrong" it would be good to cope with it. I'm running samba 3.2.5 on Debian Lenny, linux 2.6.26-2-686 kernel. The P4 has hyperthreading. I have not installed any printer drivers on the server, though they are set up on the client. Below is my smb.conf and then an excerpt from wireshark: [global] workgroup = Boylan server string = %h server wins support = yes include = /etc/samba/dhcp.conf dns proxy = no interfaces = 127.0.0.0/8 ethfast bind interfaces only = yes log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m max log size = 1000 syslog = 0 panic action = /usr/share/samba/panic-action %d encrypt passwords = true passdb backend = tdbsam obey pam restrictions = yes passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u passwd chat = *Enter\snew\s*\spassword:* %n\n *Retype\snew\s*\spassword:* %n\n *password\supdated\ssuccessfully* . printing = cups printcap name = cups socket options = TCP_NODELAY [homes] comment = Home Directories browseable = no read only = no create mask = 0700 directory mask = 0700 valid users = %S [printers] comment = All Printers browseable = no path = /var/spool/samba printable = yes guest ok = no read only = yes create mask = 0700 [print$] comment = Printer Drivers path = /var/lib/samba/printers browseable = yes read only = yes guest ok = no [download] comment = Downloads path = /usr/local/download read only = No The client is using the Brother driver for HL-5150D, driver name BROHL04A.DLL (2.16). I do shutdown cups nightly for a snapshot at that time. I do not shut down samba. I can't find much documentation on the relation between samba and cups authentication; I am using cups from a dynamic library (or at least, ldd on smbd shows the cups library). Is this Vista 64bit ? Do you have a chance to test with a more recent versions of Samba, in particular a 3.4.x release ?
(In reply to comment #3) > Is this Vista 64bit ? No. 32bit. > > Do you have a chance to test with a more recent versions of Samba, in > particular a 3.4.x release ? I haven't; I'm trying to stick with the Debian stable release.
3.4.3 seems to work much better. smbd uses 5 or 6% of CPU (once I have printed something), with another 1% for CUPS. The Vista spooler also uses around 5%, and they are busy chatting (according to wireshark). The CUPS logs no longer show "cupsdAuthorize: No authentication data provided." or much of the other chatter. However, many times a second, they show D [26/Dec/2009:23:51:15 -0800] cupsdAcceptClient: 27 from localhost (Domain) D [26/Dec/2009:23:51:15 -0800] cupsdCloseClient: 27 Sometimes it's 27 instead of 28; that may have been when I actually was printing. This behavior is much better. The load still seems a bit high; I don't know if that's inevitable or not.
More details of my setup. I used the Debian unstable sources to build packages with version 2:3.4.3-1 on my stable system. This required various dependencies, including pulling in binaries for PAM from unstable. There are also Samba 4 packages ...
3.4.3 didn't work so well; after a couple days, it used 2G of memory and brought my system to a standstill.
Also, under 3.4.3 there is still noticeable CPU load on the server (5-10%) and client (c 10%) and continuous exchanges of messages. There is more information, including packet captures, in bug 7020, which nominally concerns the memory, rather than CPU, problem. Patches in that bug to date seem to fix most, but not quite all, of the leak.
I believe this is actually a bug that Guenther has fixed with the SPOOLSS marshalling which will be in 3.4.4 (I'll look up the bug report and link to this bug later). The memory leak side-effect in bug 7020 is where I am concentrating my efforts now. Don't update your code yet though, as I need your system to reproduce the memory leak issue :-). Jeremy.
Any news on this, or anything I can try?
Created attachment 5467 [details] packet capture: samba 3.4.6 I'm still seeing a problem with samba 3.4.6, build from Debian source. A quick look at the attached wireshark capture suggests things may have changed a bit--I don't see failure/error/permission denied messages--but the overall behavior is the same. Significant (c 10%) CPU use on both client and server, a high volume of traffic between the two, and the same exchanges many times a second.
I'm still seeing problems with samba 3.4.6; see attached packet capture and comments on same. I've tried to update the samba version on this bug, but that doesn't seem to be possible.
I assume that you don't have this issue anymore after samba grew up some more years. If you still see any such problem with a recent and maintained release branch, please open a new bug report for that.
