Windows 2003 supports a technology MS call "volume shadow copies" which is similar to LVM snapshots. The UI for restoring files/directories is exported via CIFS (only, oddly enough). This was demo'd to Tridge at LCA2006 and he started making notes on this.
This is supported in samba3! and it will be also by the final samba4 release
ref: http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/VFS.html Well, Tridge didn't know about them, had to show him how to set them up. Also it would be nicer to have a generic interface for it to allow plugging in to network backup systems or similar.
Tridge promises to do this :-)

Comment on attachment 2893 [details] Here the patches This wasn't for this bug, sorry!
How far are we with this one? Is there some interest to implement this technology?

The Samba ntvfs is deprecated and the s3 fileserver is capable of exposing snapshots as shadow copies. Closing this as invalid. Thanks!
