I made a few smalls changes and my tests show ok against the latest 3.0 CVS code. please test out the latest CVS code and let me know how it goes.

please test against 3.0.1pre3. Sorry for the long delay with no updates. If you can still reproduce it, a gdb backtrace with symbols would be helpful (compile with --enable-debug).
