(original report at https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=963985) GNUstep also implements Spotlight. As such it has the mdfind binary. To allow to install both commands (GNUstep's and Samba's), one should be renamed. I propose : smbmdfind.
To be honest, I'm leaning toward keeping the name and let the packages declare a conflict. Can you please check if the name mdsearch is available on Debian? It seems not to be in use on Fedora. Thanks!
mdsearch is not used in Debian. https://packages.debian.org/search?mode=path&suite=sid§ion=all&arch=any&searchon=contents&keywords=mdsearch
I've created a MR to rename mdfind to mdsearch: https://gitlab.com/samba-team/samba/-/merge_requests/1440
