Under Mandrake 10.0 status in samba seems to be wrong : smnb is said to be non 
active (see attached file) although there actives sessions and command 
"service smb status" returns   
"smbd (pid 3258 3218) est en cours d'exécution...  
nmbd (pid 3228) est en cours d'exécution..." 
 
It looks like https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1115 but in mine 
problem is systematic

hm, I really cannot reproduce this. Maybe there is something wrong with your
start scripts or somthing Mandrake-specific is wrong
