Description Rick Gutzmer 2016-06-07 15:52:25 UTC
Hello.

I don't know if I'm in the right place, but after more than a day of pulling hair I thought I'd at last ask.

Yesterday I rebooted my Windows 10 machine and suddendly the Smb share that had been working flawlessly for years on several machines wouldn't connect. I spent most of the day fighting with Windows 10, thinking they'd done something in an update or something to break things.

Then I tried connecting to my share from the local Centos 6 box, and...

~#smbclient -L localhost -N
Segmentation fault

~#smbclient -L SMBSERVER -N
Segmentation fault

~#smbclient -U rgutzmer -L localhost
Enter rgutzmer's password:
Segmentation fault

~#smbclient -U rgutzmer -L SMBSERVER
Enter rgutzmer's password:
Segmentation fault

Log files /var/log/samba/127.0.0.1 and var/log/samba/192.168.1.50 were touched, but zero length, so I have no more information on the segfaults.

I tried all the above on my previously working Samba3 installation, using a config that hasn't been edited since 2014.
At the time, I was running Samba 3.6.25-45 provided by the http://ftp.sernet.de/pub/samba/3.6/rhel/6/x86_64/ repo.

The log files were no help, so I stripped my samba.conf down to the minimum:

[global]
        workgroup = MSHOME
        netbios name = SMBSERVER
        server signing = Auto
        map to guest = Bad User

        log file = /var/log/samba/%m
        debug class = yes
        log level = 3

[guest]
        # This share allows anonymous (guest) access
        # without authentication!
        path = /home/samba/guest/
        read only = no
        guest ok = yes

[demo]
        # This share requires authentication to access
        path = /home/samba/demo/
        read only = no
        guest ok = no

my lmhosts is really simple:
127.0.0.1       localhost
192.168.1.5     VOSTRO460
192.168.1.50    SMBSERVER

I ran one anonymous and one authenticated smbclient command, and got the segfaults again, but this time the logs showed:

~#cat /var/log/samba/192.168.1.50

Checking yum history I saw there was a libcurl update a couple days ago, and a kernel update on the first:

I don't see how either of those updates could have affected samba, since I hadn't rebooted the server to load the new kernel, but those are the only recent changes to my system.

This is when I installed the samba 4.2.10 from the CENTOS 6 base repo
Just to be sure I added myself as a user using:
smbpasswd -a rgutzmer
smbpasswd -e rgutzmer
And used the same lmhosts and smb.conf above.

Just wanted to add this.
Not only did nmb resolve to the correct IP on the linux server, but windows sees the server too...

C:\WINDOWS\system32>net view /domain:MSHOME
Server Name            Remark

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
\\SMBSERVER            Samba 4.2.10
\\VOSTRO460            VOSTRO460
The command completed successfully.

It does not see the shares though:
C:\WINDOWS\system32>net view \\SMBSERVER
System error 53 has occurred.

The network path was not found.
Comment 2 Rick Gutzmer 2016-07-25 16:44:31 UTC
I've been living without samba for over a month now, and have tried many things.
I tried compiling from source, but make fails with these lines:

tls_tstream.c:(.text+0x392d): undefined reference to `gnutls_x509_crt_deinit'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
Waf: Leaving directory `/home/root/src/samba/samba-4.4.5/bin'
Build failed: -> task failed (err #1):
        {task: cc_link packet_1.o,tls_1.o,tlscert_1.o,tls_tstream_1.o,gssapi_pac_1.o,kerberos_pac_1.o,gssapi_helper_1.o,kerberos_pac_2.o,krb5_init_context_1.o -> libauthkrb5-samba4.so}
make: *** [all] Error 1

This seems to be involved with kerberos authentication, where connections seem to be failing.

Please, can someone help?! I really miss my file server.
